Berlin: Germany aims to make its contribution to upholding international law and boosting security in the Indo-Pacific region, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday as a German frigate sailed for the region.
The international order of the future would be decided in the region, he said.
“We aim to be involved and to take responsibility for maintaining the rule-based international order,” Maas said, Deutsche press agency (dpa) reported.
Germany is part of the international effort to monitor UN sanctions on North Korea and is interested in building partnerships in the region. Government sources have also recently pointed to China’s dominant behaviour in the region.
The frigate Bayern (Bavaria) was leaving the port of Wilhelmshaven on Monday for a six-month deployment on the seas lying between the Horn of Africa, Australia and Japan. It is expected to dock in the ports of Germany partners during the deployment.
