Bahrain : Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, Vice-President of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, participated in the second segment of the Fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2).
The meeting, held virtually at the UN headquarters in Nairobi, under the theme “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”, started today, and will continue until March 2.
Addressing the session, Dr. Bin Daina asserted that the Kingdom of Bahrain attaches great importance to the issue of environment and climate change, making it one of the priorities and a cornerstone of its modern development march.
These policies adopted by the kingdom in the environment and climate change fields are the outcome of the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the unwavering interest of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, as well as the close follow-up of HM the King’s Personal Representative and SCE President, His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Dr. Bin Daina said.
He indicated that over the past years, the Supreme Council for the Environment has worked strenuously to develop environment-related laws and legislative rules to make them more effective and comprehensive, commensurate with the sustainable development goals and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, taking into account the Kingdom’s commitment to international treaties and conventions in the fields of environment and climate, noting that Bahrain is preparing to issue a new environment law, which will mark the launch of a new phase of work in the field of environment and sustainable development.
The Special Envoy for Climate Affairs affirmed the Kingdom’s resolve to face the challenges of plastic waste and eliminate their risks, as well as fulfill its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting basic natural solutions, such as expanding green spaces, to reach zero neutrality.
He also expressed the kingdom’s pride in participating in the Special Session of to be held by the UN Environment Assembly to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of UNEP in 1972 (UNEP@50). UNEP@50 will be held online and in person in Nairobi, 3-4 March.
The United Nations Environment Assembly is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment. It meets biennially to set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law.
UNEA-5 will discuss a wide range of issues, including the dimensions of plastic pollution, nature conservation, reliance on basic natural solutions to solve environmental problems and the management of chemicals and waste, in addition to the role of strengthening governance and environmental management.
