Bahrain : Bahrain has joined the world in celebrating the World Osteoporosis Day which is observed on October 20.

The international event aims to boost awareness of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis by focusing on risk factors and a healthy lifestyle to prevent the disease and fractures resulting from it.

The World Osteoporosis Day was launched on October 20, 1996 by the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) in the United Kingdom with the support of the European Committee. The World Health Organisation (WHO) rates osteoporosis among the 10 most prevalent diseases in the world.

The WHO reports show that osteoporosis is a silent serious disease that affects 30% of women after the age of 50 and 10% of men after the age of 50 years. The disease causes a deterioration in the density and strength of bones, leading to fractures.
