Amazon, earlier this year, introduced features that enable users to delete snippets of their conversations with the company’s virtual assistant, Alexa. The company announced two new utterances – “Alexa, delete what I just said” — and — “Alexa, delete everything I said today” – that would enable users to delete their Alexa recordings using a simple voice command. Now, Amazon is taking this step further by introducing new privacy focussed features for Alexa.
Amazon at its annual event on September 25 at its headquarters introduced a new Auto Delete feature for Alexa. As apart of this feature, users will have to select a time frame after which they want all their older Alexa recordings to be deleted. Alexa users can select either three months or 18 months to automatically delete their Alexa recordings. For better understanding, if you set your auto-delete time period to three months, all your Alexa recordings will be deleted every three months on an ongoing basis?
Once set, you won’t have to ask Amazon’s virtual assistant to delete your recordings over and over again. This feature will add on to other utterances – “Alexa, delete everything I said today,” and “Alexa, delete what I just said” – that enables Alexa users to access and delete utterances individually or all at once. A good thing about this feature is that apart from being rolled out in the US, Amazon is also making this feature available in India later this year. In addition to this, Amazon also announced two new utterances for Alexa that would give greater control and transparency to what Alexa heard.
When a user tells Alexa — “Alexa, tell me what you heard” – she will read back the user’s most recent voice request, which in turn would clear out any confusion or doubt. The second utterance — “Alexa, why did you do that?” — will provide a short explanation about Alexa’s response to a user’s last voice request or action. Lastly, Amazon introduced a camera shutter in Echo Show 8 that was launched at the event. This feature is similar to the one introduced by the company in Echo Show 5 and it ensures that the smart display’s camera is unable to see when users don’t want it to.
