Vienna : Arab Parliament Speaker Adel bin Abdulrahman Al Assoomi and Dr. Ghada Wali, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Organized Crime (UNODC) have signed a cooperation agreement, the first of its kind between the two institutions.

The accord was signed on the sidelines of the first Global Parliamentary Summit on Countering Terrorism held in the Austrian capital Vienna.

The signing of the agreement came from the Arab Parliament’s keenness to establish strategic and institutional partnerships with international institutions, particularly the United Nations, Al Assoomi said.

The agreement aims to set guidelines for detailed cooperation and partnership programs between the two sides in the areas of: legislative technical assistance, combating corruption, building the capacities of parliamentarians, especially in the areas of combating terrorism and extremist ideology, exchanging best practices and legislation in this field, and enhancing the role of parliamentarians. Women and human rights, he added.

The Speaker stressed that the agreement represents a major milestone in the efforts of the Arab Parliament to enhance communication and cooperation with international institutions.

The agreement with the UN and the detailed work programs that will result from it will allow the Arab Parliament to establish other institutional partnerships with numerous international and parliamentary partner organizations with the United Nations and its specialized agencies, he said.
