Gov Andrew Cuomo said New York has 85,000 medical volunteers, including 22,000 out of state volunteers, according to comments he made at a press conference today. A US health expert is concerned that prisons and jails could cause the coronavirus to spread faster in those facilities and outside. Dr. Barun Mathema, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, said that because of the high, concentrated number of people in these facilities, community spread is likely. “The prison population in and of itself has a fairly sizable, vulnerable population within that have a lot of chronic conditions, other types of infections,” Mathema said. “We should also ensure that what happens in a prison, or jail for that matter, does not pose an undue risk to the community. The United Kingdom has recorded 708 new deaths from coronavirus, the largest one-day rise since the outbreak began. According to figures released by the Department of Health and Social Care, a total of 4,313 have now died in the UK. The figures are current to 5 p.m. (12 p.m. ET) on April 3 but were released a day later. The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus as at 9 a.m. (4 a.m. ET) April 4 is 41,903, which is an increase of 3,735 from the previous day’s figures.
A new national scheme to train Bahrainis as barbers and hairdressers has been launched today. The project is spearheaded by the Noaim Charity Society in association with the Labour and Social Development Ministry and in co-ordination with Tamkeen. It would see Bahrainis licensed to open shops or work in hospitals and homes for the elderly or people with disabilities. The scheme has been nominated as the frontrunner to receive the ministry’s top innovative schemes award, which entitles the society for a cash award towards developing the scheme.
The UAE Ministry of Health Prevention, MoHAP and the Ministry of Interior, MoI, have announced the continuation of the ‘National Disinfection Programme’ as part of the preventive and precautionary measures taken by the UAE to contain COVID-19 reported Khaleej Times.
