Six people have died after floodwaters washed away a bridge in Indiana Friday morning. High waters from overnight storms caused the bridge collapse in Franklin County, authorities said. Deputies were able to recover five bodies by Friday afternoon, NBC affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati, Ohio, reported. The sixth body was found Saturday morning after authorities resumed their search. The Associated Press reported that two vehicles were swept into the floodwaters off a roadway near Laurel, about 55 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Authorities got a call at about 5 a.m. Friday from a witness who reported seeing headlights off a roadway. Emergency responders discovered the…
Vice President Mike Pence said Saturday that he and his wife Karen would be tested for the coronavirus after a staff member in his office tested positive for the virus this week. “Given the unique position that I have as vice president and as the leader of the White House coronavirus task force, both I and my wife will be tested for the coronavirus later this afternoon,” Pence said during a news conference at the White House. His office announced Friday that one of its members tested positive for the coronavirus — the closest confirmed case to Pence that is publicly known. Pence told…
Italy on Saturday reported another 793 deaths from coronavirus, a new daily record that brings the number of total deaths to 4,825, the highest globally. The latest figures provided by the Italian Civil Protection Department showed that the total number of cases in the country continues to grow, climbing 13% from Friday to reach 42,681. The epicenter of the Italian outbreak remains the northern Lombardy region, which now counts 3,095 victims. Following the urgent calls of local governors and mayors, the government approved more stringent rules late on Friday to avoid that citizens leave their homes violating the lockdown. Under…

North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the ocean Saturday in an odd show of military strength during a crippling global health crisis. The projectiles were fired around 6:45 a.m. and 6:50 a.m. from western North Korea, both flying roughly 255 miles cross-country before landing in waters off the eastern coast in the Sea of Japan, according to South Korean military officials. Japan reported the projectiles didn’t reach Japanese territory, the Associated Press reported. South Korea and the U.S. were analyzing the launches. It wasn’t immediately clear what weapons North Korea tested, but flight data…
Soldiers were being drafted in to help enforce the lockdown in Italy on Friday as officials announced 627 new deaths, the largest single-day toll anywhere in the world since the coronavirus outbreak began. Desperate scenes have unfolded in the north of the country, particularly the hard-hit Lombardy region where infections first exploded last month, as hospitals struggle to treat thousands of cases. And Chinese medical experts helping Italy deal with the crisis have said the restrictions imposed in Lombardy are “not strict enough.” The government has now agreed that the military can be used to help enforce the lockdown, the…

Iran confirmed 966 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 20,610, health ministry spokesperson Kianush Jahanpoor announced on state television Saturday. Over the last 24 hours 123 people have died from the virus, raising the death toll to 1,556, said Jahanpoor. A total of 7,635 patients have so far recovered, Jahanpoor added. Iran has the most coronavirus cases in the Middle East and is in an ongoing state of economic crisis. US sanctions on the country have seen its currency tank and unemployment grows. The sanctions also mean Iran is struggling to access coronavirus test kits due to US…
Amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said a lockdown in the future might be possible. The statement comes as COVID-19 positive cases in India have increased to 298 while four deaths have also been reported. “I appeal to all of you to discontinue your morning walks for some time and stay at home. We are not doing a lockdown currently but we might in future, if necessary for your betterment and safety,” the chief minister said today. Five or more people can not gather at any place in Delhi, Kejriwal said. “If there are five…
Authorities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan have announced fresh restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus as the number of cases in Central Asia snowballed. In Kazakhstan, where 53 cases have been confirmed, authorities said on Saturday they were closing all parks in Almaty, the country’s biggest city, which was this week put on lockdown along with capital city Nur-Sultan. Over the last two days, police and National Guard servicemen have also locked down several residential buildings in Almaty where infected people lived, Reuters reported.
