After a pep talk to scientists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday gave a long and tight hug to an emotional ISRO chief K Sivan, who was in tears, unable to come to terms overlander Vikram’s unsuccessful bid to soft-land on the moon. Modi, in his address at the ISRO center here, asked the scientists not to get disheartened by the hurdles in the lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 and asserted that there will be a “new dawn”. No sooner than the Prime Minister concluded his address, Sivan accompanied him to see him off. At this juncture, the Prime Minister, who was on his…

In a few breathless hours on Thursday morning, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital maneuvered the largest superconducting magnet in the world, a 10-ton beauty that is a million times stronger than the earth’s magnetic field, into place. With the help of some skilled crane work, the $10 million investment, designed and built-in Zurich, was safely tucked into a pocket in the lower level of the Kay Research and Care Center by early afternoon. In about a month, the 1.1-gigahertz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer is expected to be in use, giving St. Jude the most power anywhere for studying proteins, DNA,…

Effective in early disease but more research is needed for the late disease. The expanding epidemic of Ebola virus disease in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has entered its second year despite courageous efforts by Congolese and international colleagues. By the end of August, 3000 cases and 2000 deaths had been reported. Although the first Ebola outbreaks were recognized in DRC and Sudan in 1976, there has never been an effective treatment. A breakthrough was announced in August 2019. A randomized controlled trial was stopped early after a strict statistical criterion for decreased mortality was met by one of the…
The mountain peak known to Swedes as their countries highest can no longer lay claim to the title due to global heating, scientists have confirmed, as the glacier at its summit shrinks amid soaring Arctic temperatures. “This is quite a symbol,” said Gunhild Ninis Rosqvist, a Stockholm University geography professor who has been measuring the glacier annually for several years. “A very obvious, very clear signal to everyone in Sweden that things are changing.” In the far north of Sweden, about 95 miles (150km) inside the Arctic circle, Kebnekaise has two peaks: a southern, glacier-covered summit accessible to suitably equipped hikers, and…
Global investment in new capacity for renewable energy is on course to reach $2.6 trillion by the end of this decade, more than triple the amount of the previous decade, a report commissioned by the UN Environment Programme says. The figure excludes large hydropower projects and is equivalent to 1.2 terawatts (TW) of new renewable energy capacity this decade. That’s more than today’s entire US electricity generation units and half of the 2.4 TW of total power capacity installed over the same period. The UAE is also a major driver in promoting renewable energy resources. Dubai Clean Energy Strategy (DCES)…
