McKeown’s teammate, 29-year-old Emily Seebohm, came out with the bronze during the race. But during the medal ceremony, she didn’t stay on the third step on the podium for long. While Australia’s national anthem played, McKeown invited Seebohm to share the top step on the podium with her. There, Seebohm placed McKeown’s medal around her neck, which she’d asked to do before the two walked out for the medal ceremony. The two stood side by side and sang the anthem together. npr

And now, at 19, Sears has doubled down on his life as a bitcoin miner, saying “no” to college and “yes” to living in a room inside a data center that houses 4,500 whirling ASICs. “My room is sound-locked,” said Sears of the acoustic retrofitting of his living quarters. “So I can’t hear the machines when I close my door, but they are definitely noisy if I have…
US : Solar panel installations are surging in the U.S. and Europe as Western countries seek to cut their reliance on fossil fuels. But the West faces a conundrum as it installs panels on small rooftops and in sprawling desert arrays: Most of them are produced with energy from carbon-dioxide-belching, coal-burning plants in China. Concerns are mounting in the U.S. and Europe that the solar industry’s reliance on Chinese coal will create a big increase in emissions in the coming years as manufacturers rapidly scale up production of solar panels to meet demand. That would make the solar industry one of…
