Geneva : : Bahrain’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, representing the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, participated today in the United Nations Human Rights Council special session to discuss the situation of human rights in Afghanistan.
Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Yousef Abdulkarim Bucheery, delivered a statement on behalf of the GCC, in which he expressed the GCC countries’ concern over the escalating violence in Afghanistan.
He called on all parties to work to achieve stability and security, preserve lives and property, and work to achieve the hopes and aspirations of the Afghan people through a comprehensive political reconciliation process.
He noted that the GCC states stress that justice, respect for human rights and the rule of law are the foundations for national reconciliation and for achieving sustainable peace in Afghanistan.
He called for the need to protect the rights of all groups without any discrimination with full respect to human rights and international humanitarian law.
He affirmed the support of the GCC countries to the Afghan people, in cooperation with their international partners to contribute in the ongoing humanitarian evacuation operations, in addition to their continued efforts to help Afghanistan in achieving security, stability and lasting peace.
