Manama: Saturday was all action at the Indian Club as the players still in with a chance of honours at played both Quarter-Final and Semi-Final rounds, leading to the Grand Finals Day on Sunday; due to start at approximately 4 pm, Sunday’s programme will consist of the five Finals ahead of a Prize Presentation scheduled for 10 pm.

The Men’s Singles lost its final two seeds at the Quarter Final stage as Indonesia’s top seed, Ikhsan Mumbai, lost to his Indonesian compatriot Bobby Setiabuti and Jason Teh of Singapore, the No 8 seed, was beaten by India’s Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, a very popular and celebrated the victory with the ‘home’ supporters.

The partisan ‘home crowd’ was given more to cheer about when Anupama Upadhyaya continued her good run by beating Indonesia’s Stephanie Widjaja in the Quarter-Finals in front of her many ‘new fans’; sadly that was as far as she went this time around, losing out to Indonesia’s Komang Dewi in the Semi-Final; Dewi will play compatriot, Aisyah Fatetani in the Final, ensuring an Indonesian flag flying over the Women’s Singles trophy.

Sadly, Sathish Karunakaran also ran into a Semi-Final road-block, in his case, it was Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak, who took the win in straight sets; Chan will now play Indonesia’s Setiabudi in the Men’s Singles Final as he continued his good run of form by beating fellow Indonesian, Christian Adinata in three sets.

Hong Kong has already laid claim to the Mixed Doubles title as both of their pairs got through to Sunday’s final – expect a battle royal between two exciting pairings as RHC Lee and YT Ng take on HC Law and TN Yeung.

Sri Lanka’s top seeds in the Men’s Doubles, Dias and Goonethilleka were very impressive and look as if they could go all the way, although they are likely to meet some stiff Indonesian opposition along the way; they certainly won’t be meeting any Turkish ‘opposition’ as the No 2 seeded pair, Koca and Salim bowed out to the very same Indonesian opposition.

Detailed results of today’s play can be found on the Indian Club’s Facebook page – Indian Club, Bahrain.
