Geneva : Bahrain’s Kalkidan Gezahegne today won the Giants Geneva 10 km road race in 29 minutes 38 seconds to take five seconds off the women’s world record for a 10km road race.
Gezahegne, who won the 10,000 metres silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August, bettered the mark of 29.43 set by Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei in 2017.
On the occasion, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS), General Sports Authority Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President, HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, extended deepest congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and to HM the King’s Personal Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs and SCYS Chairman, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, on the landmark achievement.
HH Shaikh Khalid expressed pride in the outstanding accomplishment attained by runner Kalkidan Gezahegne, which proves her distinguished performance.
HH Shaikh Khalid paid tribute to the Bahrain Athletics Association, led by Mohammed Abdullatif bin Jalal, and board members, as well as the technical and administrative staff for their efforts to support Bahraini champions, wishing Kalkidan Gezahegne further success.
