Bahrain has been lacking an Indian Ambassador for a period of three months now. Indian Member of Parliament M.P Veerendra Kumar wrote to the Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar amidst the delay of the announcement of the new Indian Ambassador to Bahrain due to the prevailing situation.
The Minister urged the MEA to initiate action at the earliest to ensure the wellbeing and safety of expats who wish to return home.
“In such turbulent times that our embassies are called upon to perform the role of a home away from home for the welfare of our beleaguered countrymen abroad. In this instance, it might have been brought to your attention that Bahrain lacks an Indian Ambassador for a period of three months now. This will hamper our relief and repatriation efforts during such a period of epochal crisis there,” M.P Veerendra Kumar.
He further highlighted the demands of the diaspora which include; the appointment of a nodal officer in the embassy, setting up of a special quarantine centre; dedicated flights for COVID-19 afflicted, pregnant women, senior citizens, the jobless and those who are dependent on such medication, allocation of monetary aid for the Covid-19 afflicted from the community welfare fund; and testing facilities under the aegis of the embassy for coronavirus infection of those proceeding to India.
“The whole of our country eagerly awaits the return of the Indian diaspora from the Gulf. Among others, Malayalees account for a vast number of this migrant population, who also considerably to our public exchequer,” he added.
