Bahrain : A judicial committee tasked with replacing children’s court sentences started its work today, the Supreme Judicial Council has announced.
Judge Jassim Mohammed Al Ajlan, head of the High Correctional Justice Court, said that the committee on Sunday began replacing penalties for convicted children.
He stressed that the judiciary pays great attention to developing the judicial system for children’s rights in line with the international conventions and treaties ratified by the Kingdom of Bahrain and with His Majesty the King’s reform vision in order to preserve the rights of children to protection from violations and maltreatment and the right to proper litigation procedures.
The replacement of penalties for children is a highly significant step forward to correct their behavioral patterns in accordance with moral values, he added.
The committee receives requests to replace the sentences pronounced before the enforcement of the law for convicted children who were under 18 at the time of the crime, based on reports from the Correction and Rehabilitation Center submitted by the Public Prosecution, the judge said.
