    Inabisuhan ni Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual na magkaroon ng adjustment sa diet ng mga Pilipino sa kabila ng pagtaas ng presyo ng bigas.

    Sa isang panayam sa Kapihan sa Manila Bay nitong August 16 tungkol sa pagtaas ng presyo ng mga bilihin, minungkahi ng secretary na tumingin ng maaaring alternatives sa pagkain ng bigas.

    “We are used to eating rice during breakfast, ang hirap mag-shift. Sa iba naman pandesal during breakfast, regular na ‘yun,” sabi ni Pascual.

    “But there are other alternatives. Pwede naman kamote, pwede namang corn.”

    Binanggit din ni Pascual na noong nagsilbi siyang presidente ng University of the Philippines ay nagkaroon ng mga eksperimento sa rice-corn mix na maaari ring substitute sa bigas.

    “We tested the nutritional value, we tast the acceoptibility. And it was a pass. I talked to [the Department of Agriculture] at the time and they agreed na we should promote it. Of course for us in UP, although we can suggest we cannot implement,” sabi ni Pascual

    Ayon kay Pascual, makakatulong din ito sa isyu sa supply sa bansa dahil “to produce rice requires so much water. Corn can grow with much less water.”

    Kasalukuyang nasa P40 – P52 ang kada kilo ng well-milled local commercial rice, at nasa P38 – P50 kada kilo naman ang regular milled local commercial rice, ayon sa price monitoring ng Department of Agriculture.

    Kaugnay nito, binanggit ni Pascual na ginagawa ng gobyerno ang lahat ng maaaring aksyon upang mapababa ang presyo ng bigas.

    “We are increasing the productivity of our farms, diyan talaga relentless ang Department of Agriculture,” dagdag ni Pascual.

    “We’re applying all possible solutions – subsidy for fertilizers, distributions of seeds.”
