India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has developed an online dashboard to monitor and facilitate the movement of migrant workers and their contact-tracing during the lockdown.

“The central government has already allowed the movement of migrant workers by buses and Shramik Special trains to enable them to travel to their native places.” said Mr. Ajay Bhalla, Home Secretary of India.

The online dashboard is named National Migrant Information System (NMIS) and is available on the existing NDMA-GIS portal.

“It has additional advantages like contact tracing, which may be useful in overall COVID response work.” Mr. Ajay Bhalla said.

The states can upload files of individual data on the portal, this can be integrated through the Application Programming Interface.

The states can visualise the number of migrants travelling out from where and how many are reaching destination states. A unique ID is generated for each migrant.

Centre’s nodal ministries can also observe the movement of migrants through this portal.
