Moscow : Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, held a meeting here with the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Professor Tatiana Moskalkova.

They reviewed the distinguished relations between the two friendly countries, and affirmed continuous efforts to strengthen those relations in all fields, especially human rights.

Al-Derazi highlighted the role played by the NIHR in promoting and protecting human rights according to Law 26/2014 on its establishment, amended as per Decree-Law 20/2016.

The two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to deepen cooperation in protecting and following up on the rights of the citizens of the two countries.

Under the MoU, the two human rights institutions will exchange information, enhance their technical cooperation and hold joint events, such as conferences, forums and training programmes to promote the human righst concepts and principles at the local and regional levels.

The MoU is the first to be signed by Bahrain’s NIHR with one of the members of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI)’s European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI).

Professor Tatiana Moskalkova invited the NIHR to participate in monitoring the Russian parliamentary elections, due to be held next month, given its experience in this regard.

She also invited the NIHR to take part in the fifth International Conference on “Human rights protection in Eurasia: exchange of best practices of ombudsmen”, set to be hosted by Moscow in mid-October this year.

The NIHR Chairman expressed thanks and appreciation to Bahrain’s Ambassador to Russia, Ahmed Al-Saati, for the efforts he and the Bahraini Embassy’s staff had exerted to prepare for the visit of the NIHR’s delegation to Moscow and ensure its success.
