Polar Airlines became the launch customer for the Ansat rotorcraft when it secured seven of the helicopters from Russian Helicopters for operations in the far north of the country. A spokeswoman for Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Rostec State Corporation, said that a contract for the seven was clinched at the MAKS 2019 International Aviation and Space Salon at the Zhukovsky International Airport, here. She said that the contract entailed creating a special design to enable the helicopters to operate with a longer flight range, an ice protection system, and all-weather capabilities.

“The design will allow the helicopters to carry medical evacuation, search and rescue, patrolling and fire-fighting,” she said. In 2017 and 2018, Russian Helicopters provided Polar Airlines with five Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters which now operate in the Arctic region. Polar Airlines is the leading regional airline in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and flies to 163 destinations. The airline has a fleet of 64 aircraft, including 27 Mi-8/Mi-8MTV-1 helicopters, which are 42 percent of the company’s active fleet.
