Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said at the United Nations Climate Action Summit that there is no time left for talks on the environment and the world needs to act in order to protect it. “The time for talking is over, the world needs to act now,” PM Modi said during his address. Speaking at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Modi also spoke about the importance of using renewable sources of energy instead of non-renewable resources.

He highlighted how India has been championing solar energy production, adding that 80 nations are already working with the country to promote it. Modi also urged world leaders to act immediately to protect the environment as the situation has become alarming. “We believe that an ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of preaching,” PM Modi said. PM Modi went on to highlight how India has been working on a number of campaigns to prevent climate change.

“We have provided clean cooking gas connections to 150 million families. We have started ‘Jal Jeevan’ mission for water resource development, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting,” he said. “On this year’s India’s Independence Day, we called for a mass movement to have freedom from single-use plastic. I hope that this will raise awareness against the usage of single-use plastic, at a global level,” he added.

Narendra Modi also mentioned in his speech that “need and not greed” has been the guiding principle behind India’s efforts to tackle climate change. Just a day ago, PM Modi had addressed a 50,000-plus crowd who gathered for the ‘Howdy, Modi’ event at Houston, Texas. At the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the stage with US President Donald Trump and spoke about India’s progress on the world stage, including the country’s roadmap to tackle key issues like climate change and terrorism.
