Air India Express plane with over 190 people on board has crash-landed at an airport in southern India’s Kerala state, with 2 pilots and several passengers killed in the crash, while dozens were taken to area hospitals. There was no confirmation from officials as rescue workers were still at the scene.
It was a repatriation flight operated by the government to bring Indians home during international travel restrictions due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The accident happened at about 7:45 p.m. on Friday when the aircraft, a Boeing 737, was attempting to land at Calicut International Airport after a flight from Dubai.
Alphons KJ, a former government minister, said sources in Kerala had told him the pilot was killed in the crash-landing. “Lots of passengers injured,” he said.

Footage from the scene showed that the aircraft had broken into at least two pieces after apparently overshooting the runway. “Very lucky the aircraft didn’t catch fire,” Alphons KJ said.
News reports said passengers were evacuated from the Boeing aircraft.
“Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted referring to Calicut’s new name. “My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” he said.
In May 2010, 158 people died when an Air India Express flight overshot Mangalore airport runway and crashed.
